I’ve just found a rather interesting site today, and for once it has nothing to do with anything weird or scary (nothings perfect, right?)
At first glance I thought that the site would only be of interest to kids. I delved a little deeper, and guess what, I was wrong.
The site is called Story Book England, and after a brief animated introduction, which can be skipped, you are presented with a map of England and a list of authors. By clicking on the author’s name you shown, on the map, where the author lived. Neat idea, I thought. I might have left the site at that point, but out of curiosity, I clicked a little more and discovered that there was a lot more information available than I thought.
For instance, I clicked on JRR Tolkien, and was shown where he lived. I then clicked on the star that represented him on the map, and was directed to a page that told me a little more about the people and place that had inspired Tolkien’s work. Did you know that, according to the author, the habits of the Hobbits are based on the habits of the people living in Sarehole village? I didn’t, but I know now. I also now know that Lancashire’s Ribble Valley is supposedly the inspiration behind Middle Earth.
It is interesting to get a chance to see the inspiration behind a writer’s creations, therefore this, for me is quite an interesting site to visit.
You can browse the map by the author, or the author’s work, which is handy, and Authors include:
- JK Rowling
- Roald Dahl
- Robert Louis Stevenson
- Rudyard Kipling
- Mary Tourtel
- Lewis Carroll
The list does go on, but it is no use me going on about it here, if you want to see the list in its entirety you can visit the site by clicking HERE.
