The Origin of Trick or Treat

Posted on October 4, 2006November 27, 2024 by Steve Calvert

Have you ever wondered about the origin of the Trick or Treat tradition, or have you always been too busy stuffing your face with all of that hard gotten Halloween candy?

If this is a question that you have pondered over, I am afraid that there is no definite answer for you. One very plausible explanation though could be that the practice of Trick or Treating was developed from the medieval custom of souling, which originated in the UK. On All souls day beggars used to go from door to door, offering to say prayers for any dead friends or relatives that the householder might wish them to. In exchange for this offering up of prayers the beggars received a return offering of food. More often than not in the form of soul cakes (a kind of bread with currants in them).

Halloween Humour

Halloween, surprisingly, isn’t a vampire’s favourite time of the year. Apparently they much prefer FangsGiving.
