A couple of days ago someone sent me a free Halloween e-book. I have had a slight involvement with internet marketing, so I often get things like this. Usually, in the case of a free e-book, the e-book will be filled with lots of affiliate links, and if the reader then buys anything, from the site the links directed them to, the affiliate who designed the e-book will get paid a commission. In some case the affiliate gets paid just because someone has clicked on the links. This is why the person that created the e-book is prepared to give it away for free. The more people that get the e-book, and then hopefully pass it on, the more chances the creator of the book has of getting paid. If an e-book covers a subject that is very specific it could be said to be a niche product. If the e-book covers a subject that is so amusing, interesting or popular that it is likely to get passed around a lot and very quickly then it would be said to be viral – hence the term viral marketing.

The e-book that I received was about Halloween so it is certainly a niche product. Is it viral? Who knows. I suppose the creator is hoping so. I must say it is not the best of e-books. It is in exe format and can only be read if an active internet connection is present. The reason for this is because all that the e-book contains is links. There are a lot of Google Adsense advertisements and Ebay links (to generate revenue) and the main content of the book consists of links to websites that have Halloween articles etc posted on them.

I saw all of this as soon as I opened it up and understood what I had been given. I have had a little look through some of the links though, and there is some useful information available: Halloween crafts, costumes (make your own etc), Pumpkin carving, how to make a haunted house.
