Tulpa?… What’s that?

Posted on July 12, 2007November 27, 2024 by Steve Calvert

A couple of days ago I was surfing the web and I saw a word that I didn’t know: tulpa. It sounded familiar, but if I ever knew what it meant I had forgotten. I looked into the meaning of this strange sounding word and, when I found out what it meant, I realized that I had read about tulpas before, though not in any great detail. A tulpa apparently is an entity that is created by thought.

I found a rather interesting tale of a man who extolled a lot of time and energy in the creation of a tulpa that looked like a monk, and the creation was supposedly so good that other people saw it and mistook it for a real person. So there the guy is with this spooky entity that is nothing more than a glorified puppet. Then he loses control of the thing. It takes on a life of its own, and he decides that he will have to get rid of it. And he does. But it is so strong that it takes him six months to do so. It’s an interesting story and I think I have read it before. I’m not saying that I believe in tulpas. Then again, I am not saying that I do not. All I am saying is that it’s and interesting concept.
