Let’s Talk Nuts

Posted on July 7, 2006November 27, 2024 by Steve Calvert

At one time, here in the UK, Halloween was very much at time for having your fortune told and there were any number means of doing so. One example involved nuts. No, I’m not talking about the kind of nuts that walk backwards around their house on Halloween, in an attempt to keep away the evil spirits. Nor am I talking about the people that drink evil amounts of spirits, become wickedly drunk, and then act nuts. The kind of nuts I am talking about are nuts like hazelnuts.

In different parts of the country the nuts were used in different ways. In Scotland, for instance, hazelnuts were often used to divine the future of a relationship. For example, in the case of Jack and Jill, would their relationship last, or would it come tumbling down when Jill decided that Jack was over the hill?

Only one way to find out:

Burning the nuts

Two nuts were selected and given names that corresponded to the members of the relationship in question. The two nuts were then placed, next to each other, on a fire. If the nuts burned away evenly and stayed together it was believed that the couple would have a long and happy life together. If, on the other hand, the nuts rolled apart, then the couple was destined to separate.

Halloween Humour

Dracula had chased the Scotsman down a dead end street. The vampire took his time now. The man had nowhere to run. Underneath his kilt, the man’s hairy kneecaps banged together in fright.

“Och! Leave me alone … leave me alone, “the man begged.

Dracula wouldn’t leave him alone though. He’d never been able to resist McDonalds, especially not with a shake.
