Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII’s second wife. The couple married in a secret ceremony in January 1533. Anne received her crown that June and three months later Henry received a daughter, Elizabeth.
In just a matter of a few years though, the unfortunate Anne had a change of quarters forced upon her, and exchanged the royal bedroom for the royal lock-up when, on May 2 1536, she was imprisoned in The Tower of London on charges of adultery with three gentleman of the privy chamber and a court musician. She was even accused of having an incestuous relationship with her own brother! She had also apparently been conspiring against her husband’s life as well.
Of course, it is a little late in the day to get to the truth of the matter now, but I think that most people with even the most basic of education realize that Henry VIII was one of the biggest love rats to ever tread the red carpet. Anne was beheaded on May 19 and 11 days later Henry married Jane Seymour.
So that is the tragic story of Anne Boleyn, but there are those who believe that if you are lucky you might, even to this day, catch a glimpse of the unfortunate lady as she crosses the bridge over the river Eden at Hever, Kent, every Christmas Eve. I am not sure why she is supposed to haunt this location, at this particular time, but that is the story. If, after reading this, you believe the charges against Anne (and I don’t, by the way), consider her a bit of a goer and fancy a date with her for some spooky, winter loving; here is a MAP. But don’t come running to me if you get stood up. Or if you don’t!
